Starbucks Launches Mobile Ordering in Portland – Is Canada Next?

Today Starbucks launched Mobile Order & Pay in Portland and announced that they expect to introduce this feature across the US beginning in 2015.

Considering there are now more Starbucks per capita in Canada than any other country in the world, it’s just a matter of time until this service is available north of the border.

Mobile Order & Pay allows customers to place orders in advance of their visit and pick them up at their chosen Starbucks store.

The mobile ordering experience is seamlessly integrated into Starbucks mobile app and My Starbucks Rewards loyalty program.

Upon first use, customers will be asked to accept location services allowing Starbucks to identify the nearest location offering Mobile Order & Pay. Store locations appear based on the GPS functionality of a customer’s iPhone.

If customers choose not to accept location services, they will not be able to use the Mobile Order & Pay feature but will have access to the Starbucks Mobile Menu.

Starbucks has been an innovative force in mobile payments in North America. Powered by one of the better retail apps, Starbucks has over 10 million mobile users, making it the most-used mobile payments app on the continent. Amazingly, a full 15 percent of Starbucks purchases in the US are made with smartphones.

These consumers combine for 4% of all mobile payments, which led to more than $1 billion in mobile payment revenue for Starbucks in 2013.
