Sustainable Waterloo Aims To Turn Tech Companies Green

Sustainable Waterloo is a new not for profit organization that aims to help Waterloo’s tech companies cut down on their carbon emissions. The organization will provide companies with tools to measure their carbon emissions as well as assist them in reducing emissions. Sustainable Waterloo will also attempt to bring recognition to companies in the area that are successfully reducing their emissions. Members of the organization will also have access to special events such as Sustainable Waterloo’s first forum and environmentally friendly technical workshops.

The organization is still in its early days and it remains to be seen if it will be a success. Similar initiatives such as Sustainable Silicon Valley have been successful, but it remains to be seen if the Waterloo area can support one of its own. Sustainable Waterloo’s current goal is to sign up ten partners for 2009. Each partner pays annual fees of $1,000 to $5,000 to help sustain the organization.

Although companies are becoming increasingly concerned with their environmental image Sustainable Waterloo’s biggest obstacle may be the current economic climate. In response to the economic crisis Sustainable Waterloo’s director points out, “there is an environmental crisis as well…there can be a double win, for the environment and the economy”.
