Tax time for R&D can mean deep refunds

The business of science should be science, but too often monetary concerns and funding issues get in the way of research and development. But a new seminar, presented by Vancity Capital and Revenue Services Group on February 29th at the Hilton Metrotown in Burnaby, aims to explain to BC businesses how to get funding they may not have known even existed.

The talk, which goes from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., will cover the Scientific Research and Experimental Development program (SR&ED), a federal incentive plan to encourage Canadian businesses to conduct product development in Canada. Industry expert David Kaplan will explain how to receive up to 68 percent of labour costs back as a refund on a yearly basis, and how many ‘business as usual’ expenses actually qualify for tax credits. The issue of subordinated debt, a rapidly growing form of private equity, will also be covered by Axel Christiansen. For more information, contact Terra Mackie.
