Toronto Mayor Rob Ford Presents Canadian Tech Leader Award

Last night the 2013 Canadian Technology Leaders Awards were held in Toronto.

The new awards were established to recognize leadership and honour “the outstanding work of Canadians in the fields of science, technology and the media”.

Event organizers were able to pull the spotlight from the Toronto mayoral debate that took place earlier in the evening and had candidates John Tory, Olivia Chow, and Rob Ford presenting awards.

John Tory presented the Honourary Lifetime Achievement Award to the widow of Dr. Scott A. Vanstone, a pioneer in the field of crytography.

The Honourary Science & Community Award was presented to Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield. His son Evan Hadfield was on hand to accept the award from Olivia Chow on behalf of his father.

Mayor Rob Ford awarded that Can Tech Leader Award – chosen by a panel of 60 judges – to Geordie Rose, the Founder & CTO of D-Wave Systems. D-Wave’s Murray Thom accepted the award for Rose.

The Vancouver-based quantum computing company has been getting a lot of recognition lately for its innovative, groundbreaking technology, including being named one of the world’s smartest tech companies. Last month it made the cover of TIME magazine.
