In Blow to Montreal Gaming Industry, Government Cuts Back Subsidiary Bonuses and Tax Credits

Cutbacks by the Quebec provincial government are impacting Ubisoft’s ability to expand in Montreal.

Several other videogame agencies are also likely to be affected by the government’s reductions in subsidiary bonuses and tax credits, including Square-Enix Montreal and Edios Montreal.

Ubisoft’s studio was created with government funding and announced plans last year to invest up to $400 million in an expansion that would create 500 new jobs and improve the company’s facilities, ultimately hiring 3,500 employees in Quebec by 2020. But the government’s cuts may force Ubisoft to scale back its expansion plans, though for now the critically acclaimed developer is merely saying it is “analyzing” the situation.
