Vancouver Marathon a success on the roads and online

The 38th annual BMO Vancouver Marathon attracted almost 14,000 athletes from 38 countries yesterday.

The event raised more than $30,000 for the BC Cancer Foundation, Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, The Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society, Heart & Stroke Foundation and Ronald McDonald House. That’s a big increase over the 2008 tally of $12,000 and chairman of the board of the Vancouver International Marathon Daryl Doyle credited the increase to the 1,000 more runners who took part over last year.

Among the booths at the Marathon Expo before and after the race were two that might have looked out of place to the average runner. Vancouver’s Red Rocket Creative Strategies and Smallbox Software were well aware of the organizers goals for 2009 – to increase event participation and build awareness locally and internationally – and their work on this year’s event website and marketing collateral went a long way to reaching those goals.
