Waterloo’s Kik Messenger rings in the New Year with its three millionth user

It’s a good start to the new year for Kik Messenger. The cross-platform instant messaging app has earned its three millionth user.

Although Kik was given the boot from RIM’s BlackBerry App World due to a violation of contract, the startup is still seeing growth of 10,000 users per day through Androids and iPhones.

Kik is free and, being new, still constantly upgrading its functionality. It also says a Windows 7 Phone version will be out soon. This all means that growth will probably remain steady through the year, as it offers a BBM-like service to all the smartphones without such a handy feature. And given that these three million users have come in a short time – since October 21 of last year – Kik’s user base could easily double, if not triple, by the end of 2011.
