Webnames.ca and the Canary Derby

Techvibes is a media sponsor of the Vancouver Canary Derby on June 27th.

No, this isn’t all about webbed feet and singing birds. It’s about a high-technology company and its involvement in the second annual Vancouver Canary Derby. Let me explain…

Webnames.ca is Canada’s original domain registrar and a one-stop convenience for web hosting, email, SSL certificates and a full range of Internet services. Canadian owned and operated since 2000, and currently with a staff of about 30 employees, Webnames.ca began as a spin-off from the Internet pioneers who founded the .CA domain in 1987. With hundreds of thousands of domain names under management Webnames.ca clients include many of Canada’s Fortune 500, top trademark agents, government and more. Realizing that excellence is not measured by business success alone, Webnames.ca strives to make a positive impact in the community by supporting local organizations and charitable initiatives. The management team mentors, sponsors and participates on the boards of numerous non-profit technology, small business and entrepreneurial organizations. The Webnames.ca team is proud to support and participate in such an amazing cause as the Canary Derby.

Cybele Negris, co-founder of Webnames.ca, informs us that The Canary Derby is a great fit for Webnames.ca because it provides them with the opportunity to work with other companies in the technology community to make a difference together. Many of the staff, including two of the co-founders, have either lost family members to cancer or continue to have family battling this dreaded disease. Cybele explains that her father has been fighting for 12 years with colon cancer metastasized to the lung, lymphnodes and then the brain. The pain and suffering experienced by her family and so many others who have been afflicted could have been prevented if early detection blood tests coupled with molecular imaging were available. Therefore, Webnames.ca is fully committed to raising as much money as possible for this cause and ensuring the Canary Foundation/BC Cancer Foundation reach the goal of having 6 early detection tests for solid tumors by 2015.

We asked about their derby kart and were told that Webnames.ca’s go-kart is pretty stylish but they are going for speed again this year. Meryll, their office administrator, will be driving. She’s not an experienced racer but she’s totally up for the challenge. Webnames.ca’s theme is the red and white Canadian flag stemming from their roots as the original .CA domain name registrar. The team built their car last year in a few weekends but are currently working on making the wheels better this year (it really is all about the wheels!). This year’s fundraising goal is to beat their last year’s total of $15,000.

When Ms. Negris was asked if she had any challenges for the other participating derby teams she responded with alacrity “Absolutely. We are a small company compared to the big ones like Rogers, Cisco, Coastal Contacts for example. We won the top fund-raiser trophy last year so bring in on guys!”

Cybele, we will.
