WestJet Airlines plans to allow passengers to use their laptops, tablets, and smartphones to access internet inflight, according to the company’s chief executive officer, Gregg Saretsky.
The airline says a prototype will be tested in the first half of 2013.
Currently, WestJet plays 24 television channels and four channels of stored content, as well as rents out pre-loaded tablets. The new entertainment system will not only meet the demands of modern consumers, but will also shed more than 500 kilograms of weight from each aircraft.
American carrier JetBlue saw revenue jump by $150 million when it implemented a similar technology update. WestJet won’t guess how much of a boost its own system will deliver.
The Calgary-based company is also planning to implement new seat technology that utilizes thinner seats. The airline says this will create the illusion that there is more space and legroom for passengers.
