WiLAN initiates litigation against almost every major tech company

Ottawa-based technology licensing firm WiLAN announced earlier today that the company is suing nearly every major technology company for violating a patent on frequency transmission by selling Bluetooth devices.

From WiLAN’s press release, the list of defendents is as follows:

Acer, Inc., Acer America Corporation, Apple, Inc., Atheros Communications, Inc., Belkin International, Inc., Broadcom Corporation, Dell, Inc., D-Link Corporation, D-Link Systems, Inc., Gateway, Inc., Hewlett-Packard Company, Intel Corporation, Lenovo Group Ltd., Lenovo (United States) Inc., LG Electronics Mobilecomm U.S.A., Inc., LG Electronics, Inc., Marvell Semiconductor, Inc., Motorola, Inc., Personal Communications Devices, LLC, Sony Corporation, Sony Corporation of America, Sony Electronics, Inc., Sony Computer Entertainment America, Inc., Texas Instruments, Incorporated, Toshiba America, Inc., Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Toshiba Corporation, and UTStarcom, Inc.

At issue is U.S. Patent # 5,515,369 which WiLAN alleges the above companies are violating by selling cellphones, laptops and other electronic devices with Bluetooth functionality.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. Court for the Eastern District of Texas, a frequent battleground for patent disputes.
