Working at Clearly Means Bringing Clear Vision to the World

Last year, Clearly announced their ambitious vision to make vision care accessible worldwide.

“We are enabling better vision for everyone through technology, product, experience, and our people,” says CEO Roy Hessel.

Employees at the company have the opportunity to be at the fore of realizing that vision.

Clearly’s charitable arm, Change the View, employs the company’s knowledge and resources to provide proactive preventative services to impoverished areas in Africa and underserved groups here in Canada.  For the last three years, Clearly has partnered with Free the Children, sending a group of team members to the Masai Mara in Kenya.  Quarterly, the company holds events at which employees can volunteer to do vision screening and glasses distribution in local, underserved communities.

Direct participation in a potentially world-changing goal is only one element of what makes the culture at Clearly exceptional.

Naturally, as an eyewear company, Clearly ensures all of their employees are keeping up with their vision health by offering a pair of glasses or a supply of contact lenses annually and an eye exam bi-annually. Employees at Clearly have access to a number of benefits at the company that include comprehensive extended medical coverage and flexible spending accounts. The extended medical plan includes health, dental, life insurance, and long-term disability.

The flexible spending account provides employees with an annual allotment that they can choose to put towards a Health Spending Account, Lifestyle Spending Account, or RRSP. Daycare fees, transit and parking passes, pet care, and wellness programs are some examples of the services which can be partially reimbursed through that Lifestyle Spending Account.

Employees are also given the opportunity to acquire an ownership interest and share in its future performance of Clearly’s parent company Essilor International. Clearly matches 100% of employee contributions towards both Essilor International stocks and their retirement savings.

With regard to professional training, Clearly offers employees several programs.

Hessel says, “Through our Break to Educate program, we invite experts to the office to speak on a variety of topics including health, finance and business. Women@Clearly is a program that connects women in the workplace with information, mentorship and education. The Women@Clearly team hosts events throughout the year, open to all employees, regardless of which gender they identify with, where internal and external women leaders share their career paths and learnings. ClearlyU, our online training platform, is available to all employees covering a variety of subjects including product knowledge, optics, leadership and career management.”

Additionally, every employee receives an annual education allotment that can be used towards courses or programs that are related to business or that advance an employee’s knowledge base or skills.

Speaking about the motivation of employees working at Clearly, Hessel’s says, “You have the opportunity to change the way people see every day and know you are making a positive impact on people’s lives. You would be part of a global brand that’s known for making a change in how eyewear is purchased, where the opinions of our team members are valued and acted upon and where personal accountability is a priority. And number one: the people. You can ask any team member and they will say the people they work with, the friends they’ve made, and good times they’ve shared are what makes us feel more like a family. We offer a positive work environment and celebrate our culture. All of this in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.”
