{"id":100045,"date":"2017-12-14T12:00:17","date_gmt":"2017-12-14T17:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/techvibes.com\/?p=100045"},"modified":"2017-12-14T11:49:32","modified_gmt":"2017-12-14T16:49:32","slug":"facebook-releases-first-canadian-election-integrity-video","status":"publish","type":"magazine","link":"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/magazine\/facebook-releases-first-canadian-election-integrity-video","title":{"rendered":"Facebook Releases First Canadian Election Integrity Video"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Facebook has released a new update in their attempt to stop the spread of fake news.<\/p>\n<p>The social media giant has introduced several changes recently in support of their <a href=\"https:\/\/borndigital.com\/2017\/10\/19\/facebook-canada-details-its-election-integrity-initiative\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Election Integrity Initiative<\/a>, and today Facebook\u2019s first collaborative video with MediaSmarts has been released.<\/p>\n<p>The video outlines easy ways for Canadians to determine whether or not the story they are reading is fake or has false information. A <a href=\"http:\/\/mediasmarts.ca\/sites\/mediasmarts\/files\/tip-sheet\/tipsheet_news_you_can_use.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">tip sheet<\/a> has also been released to help readers stop the spread of misinformation and false journalism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFacebook plays an important role in facilitating public dialogue, which is why we&#8217;re committed to making it a safe and secure environment for authentic civic engagement,\u201d said Kevin Chan, head of public policy at Facebook Canada. \u201cWe\u2019ve partnered with MediaSmarts to help Canadians make more informed decisions in the lead up to the next election, as digital literacy is critical to preventing the spread of false news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ie2MnnWMqMA?rel=0\" width=\"855\" height=\"455\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The steps are easy to follow and look to make the process of validating news as simple as possible, so anyone from a teenager to a senior can follow along and maintain an unbiased view of current events.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Check the original source and see if the author actually exists and whether or not they have a reputable track record of accurate reporting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Use fact-checking sites to see if a story is true. Facebook recommends <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Snopes<\/a> for stories and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tineye.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">TinEye<\/a> for images. Reverse image and video searches are particularly important as a lot of false info can be spread through very shareable pictures. Alternatively, search any headlines along with the words \u201choax\u201d or \u201cscam\u201d to see if it is real.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Always think before sharing, and make sure the stories being spread are real and won\u2019t misinform a friend or colleague. Sometimes that extra bit of digging can go a long way<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cOur research shows that Canadians are more likely to trust news shared by their family and friends on social media,\u201d said Matthew Johnson, director of education for MediaSmarts. \u201cThat\u2019s why it\u2019s so important we take a minute to make sure a story is true before we pass it on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This video is the first one to be released as part of Facebook\u2019s two-year digital news literacy partnership called \u201cReality Check\u201d with MediaSmarts. MediaSmarts is a non-profit centre that has been producing materials around the authentication of information for Canadian homes and classrooms for over 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>When Facebook announced their Canadian Election integrity Initiative, the first tips to come out were based on account protection and cybersecurity.
