After getting off to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/borndigital.com\/2018\/04\/13\/canadas-technology-vc-deals-had-a-record-setting-q1-in-2018\" target=\"_blank\">record-setting start in Q1<\/a>, overall activity stayed strong throughout the year. Check out Canada&#8217;s largest funding rounds over the last 12 months\u2014some names may surprise you, while others have become household\u00a0brands in the industry. All figures are CAD.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.) Enerkem &#8211; $280 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Starting off the year strong was Enerkam, a Montreal-based cleantech firm that specializes in producing renewable\u00a0chemicals from waste materials. Enerkem <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newswire.ca\/news-releases\/enerkem-raises-its-largest-financing-round-of-c280-million-in-new-capital-672952793.html\" target=\"_blank\">raised $280 million<\/a> in early February from investors such as\u00a0Rho Ventures and Fonds de solidarit\u00e9 FTQ, Cycle Capital, and the National Bank of Canada.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.) PointClickCare &#8211; $186 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This Toronto-based provider of cloud software for the senior care market picked up $186 million from their institutional investor, Dragoneer. This latest investment valued the company at over $1 billion, making it the latest entrant to Canada&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/borndigital.com\/2018\/07\/10\/narwhal-list\" target=\"_blank\">list of narwhals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.) Hopper &#8211; $128 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Travel and experiences are one of the fastest-growing markets, and Hoper took advantage of that rapid growth by raising <a href=\"https:\/\/borndigital.com\/2018\/10\/04\/hopper-raises-100-million-in-series-d-funding-round\" target=\"_blank\">$128 million<\/a> this past October in a round led by OMERS Ventures. The Montreal-based firm offers users an easy and intuitive way to book travel on their phone, powered by machine learning insights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.)\u00a0Sonder &#8211; $115 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Travel continued to shine in August when Sonder raised <a href=\"https:\/\/borndigital.com\/2018\/08\/23\/sonder-closes-85-million-round-and-reveals-135-million-in-total-funding\" target=\"_blank\">$115 million<\/a> from Greenoaks Capital, among others. The Montreal platform acts as a sort of Airbnb but for spaces that are owned or leased by Sonder themselves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.)\u00a0Coveo &#8211; $100 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Quebec City&#8217;s Coveo raised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coveo.com\/en\/company\/news-releases\/2018\/coveo-announces-100-million-investment-led-by-evergreen-coast-capital\" target=\"_blank\">$100 million<\/a> from Evergreen Coast Capital and other large investors. Coveo uses AI insights to personalize digital experiences for their clients, working with huge names such as\u00a0Adobe, Microsoft and Salesforce.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Honourable Mentions<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clearbanc\u00a0<\/strong>raised two separate financing rounds less than 35 days apart. The first, a <a href=\"https:\/\/borndigital.com\/2018\/11\/12\/clearbanc-raises-70-million-to-improve-the-funding-ecosystem\" target=\"_blank\">$94 million round<\/a>, came in November from the likes of\u00a0Emergence Capital and Social Capital. The second, just over a month later, came in at <a href=\"https:\/\/borndigital.com\/2018\/12\/18\/clearbanc-stays-on-a-roll-with-additonal-50-million-in-financing\" target=\"_blank\">$67 million<\/a> from Upper90 and took only 17 days from start to finish to complete. The Toronto-based\u00a0Clearbanc\u00a0offers businesses an alternate route to funding by giving them money to buy ads, then taking a percentage of sales from leads generated by those ads until the debt is repaid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ritual<\/strong>, based in Toronto, raised <a href=\"https:\/\/borndigital.com\/2018\/06\/06\/ritual-picks-up-a-70-million-series-c\" target=\"_blank\">$90 million<\/a> for their Series C in June from the likes of Georgian Partners and others. The\u00a0platform allows users to order food and beverages ahead of time and then go in-store to pick them up. It has launched in several major North American markets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ecobee<\/strong>\u00a0raised <a href=\"https:\/\/borndigital.com\/2018\/03\/07\/ecobee-announces-80-million-raise-and-plans-50-million-more\" target=\"_blank\">$80 million<\/a> in March from Energy Impact Ventures (and others), and then\u00a0added onto their Series C with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/borndigital.com\/2018\/05\/31\/ecobee-raises-47-million-to-top-off-massive-series-c-round\" target=\"_blank\">$47 million<\/a> in May from Caisse de d\u00e9p\u00f4t et placement du Qu\u00e9bec among others. Also based in Toronto, ecobee is a leader in smart home technology with their Alexa-powered smart thermostat technology.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This last year was another impressive one for Canadian technology companies.
