{"id":118480,"date":"2020-10-06T15:28:44","date_gmt":"2020-10-06T19:28:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.borndigital.com\/?p=118480"},"modified":"2020-10-06T15:28:45","modified_gmt":"2020-10-06T19:28:45","slug":"instagram-expands-shopping-functionality-to-igtv-and-reels","status":"publish","type":"magazine","link":"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/magazine\/instagram-expands-shopping-functionality-to-igtv-and-reels","title":{"rendered":"Instagram Expands Shopping Functionality to IGTV and Reels"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Need to Know\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Instagram has expanded its Shopping functionality to now include almost every feature of the app: Live, Stories, IGTV, and later this year, Reels.<\/li><li>The new feature offers more ways for small business owners and creators to earn money online while providing a new revenue stream for the social media giant.<\/li><li>Facebook-owned Instagram makes money through advertising as well as a selling fee on in-app purchases.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Analysis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instagram has <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2020\/10\/05\/instagram-expands-shopping-on-igtv-plans-test-of-shopping-on-reels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">updated its Instagram Shopping functionality<\/a> to offer even more ways for businesses to sell directly to their audiences.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After expanding Shopping features to include <a href=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/2020\/06\/24\/instagram-expands-shopping-features-to-smbs-creators\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">small business owners and creators<\/a> this past spring, the social media mega platform is now evolving once again to include its Shopping service across IGTV and Reels.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, Instagram users can shop directly from Instagram\u2019s Live, Stories, IGTV, and later this year, Reels features.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDigital creators and brands help bring emerging culture to Instagram, and people come to Instagram to get inspired by them. By bringing shopping to IGTV and Reels, we\u2019re making it easy to shop directly from videos. And in turn, helping sellers share their story, reach customers, and make a living,\u201d said Instagram COO Justin Osofsky in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The changes are designed to appeal to businesses and content creators who want more ways to monetize their Instagram platforms without having to direct fans to an online shop.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This new functionality allows Instagram to collect a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2020\/10\/05\/instagram-expands-shopping-on-igtv-plans-test-of-shopping-on-reels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">selling fee<\/a>\u201d on those purchases (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/business\/help\/223030991929920?id=533228987210412\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">taking 5% per shipment,<\/a> which are waived until December 31), producing a new revenue stream for the company, as well as incentivizing businesses to advertise within the app (in 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/articles\/personal-finance\/030915\/how-instagram-makes-money.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Instagram generated $20 billion in advertising revenue<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As more and more businesses move online or improve their digital strategy, Facebook, which owns Instagram, has put a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobilemarketer.com\/news\/instagram-brings-shopping-to-reels-igtv-as-commerce-commands-social-spotli\/586403\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spotlight on e-commerce too<\/a>.
