{"id":43264,"date":"2012-09-16T07:09:00","date_gmt":"2012-09-16T03:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/?p=43264"},"modified":"2012-09-16T08:09:54","modified_gmt":"2012-09-17T04:09:54","slug":"canadas-broadband-caps-almost-a-human-rights-violation-says-netflix-exec","status":"publish","type":"magazine","link":"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/magazine\/canadas-broadband-caps-almost-a-human-rights-violation-says-netflix-exec","title":{"rendered":"Canada\u2019s broadband caps \u2018almost a human rights violation\u2019 says Netflix exec"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right; margin: 15px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.computerabuser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Netflix_Canada-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>According to a survey conducted in March 2012, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/ten-percent-of-canadians-now-use-netflix-2012-03-20\">10% of Canadians use Netflix<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But Netflix&#8217;s Ted Sarandos thinks that number would be a lot higher if it wasn&#8217;t for Canadian ISPs.<\/p>\n<p>This week at the Merrill Lynch Media, Communications and Entertainment conference Sarandos <a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/video\/netflix-canada-caps-human-rights-violation\/\">made a statement<\/a> about the broadband caps imposed on customers by Canadian ISPs: &#8220;It&#8217;s almost a human rights violation what they&#8217;re charging for Internet in Canada.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- pagebreak --><\/p>\n<p>Sarandos bold statement shouldn&#8217;t come as much of a surprise.<\/p>\n<p>The CRTC and organizations like OpenMedia have been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/crtc-to-rogers-stop-throttling-the-speed-of-online-games-or-well-hurt-you-2011-09-16\">battling<\/a> for Internet openness and fairness to consumers for years.<\/p>\n<p>And, of course, Rogers has been named <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/rogers-is-officially-the-worlds-worst-internet-throttler-2011-10-22\">the worst throttler in the world<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to a survey conducted in March 2012, 10% of Canadians use Netflix.
