{"id":57172,"date":"2014-07-25T07:07:00","date_gmt":"2014-07-25T03:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/?p=57172"},"modified":"2014-07-25T08:07:34","modified_gmt":"2014-07-25T04:07:34","slug":"velocity-fund-flourishes-and-continues-to-fund-student-startups","status":"publish","type":"magazine","link":"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/magazine\/velocity-fund-flourishes-and-continues-to-fund-student-startups","title":{"rendered":"Velocity Fund Flourishes and Continues to Fund Student Startups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right; margin: 5px 15px;\" src=\"http:\/\/velocity.uwaterloo.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/S14VFF-736x490.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"213\" \/>The University of Waterloo&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/velocity.uwaterloo.ca\/velocity-fund\/\">Velocity Fund<\/a> was established in 2011 following a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/kiks-ted-livingston-sparks-velocity-funding-contest-for-waterloo-students-2011-05-06\">donation of $1 million by Kik founder<\/a> and Velocity Residence alumnus Ted Livingston.<\/p>\n<p>The Velocity Fund is a grant program for startups and aspiring entrepreneurs to win funding through competitions held three times per year with four $25K grants for the best companies who are current students or recent alumni who have graduated within the past year.<\/p>\n<p><!-- pagebreak --><\/p>\n<p>Late last year, Velocity received a donation from the founders of BufferBox (a previous winner) to encourage the creation of a hardware award given the additional costs to build successful hardware startups.<\/p>\n<p>Now established, the Velocity $10K Hardware award is a grant for the best hardware company who wins the Velocity Fund $25K.<\/p>\n<p>Velocity also awards three $1K grants for very early stage startups with the most innovative business, best pitch and people choice&rsquo;s.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2014, Velocity received <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/angel-investor-donates-1-million-to-velocity-at-the-university-of-waterloo-2014-03-24\">another $1 million donation<\/a> &#8211; this time from renowned Waterloo Region angel investor Mike Stork.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday at the University of Waterloo <a href=\"http:\/\/velocity.uwaterloo.ca\/2014\/07\/exvivo-grobo-majik-and-ubiq-just-won-25k\/\">the Velocity Fund continued to fund<\/a> the best student startups.<\/p>\n<p>10 young entrepreneurs started off this season&#8217;s Velocity event pitching live for three $1K prizes. Out of ten competing companies, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suncayr.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Suncayr<\/a> won two of the awards: Most Innovative and People&rsquo;s Choice. <a href=\"http:\/\/boogaloobunks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Boogaloo Bunks<\/a> won Best Pitch.<\/p>\n<p>The afternoon&rsquo;s $25K competition drew a huge standing-room-only crowd and in the end, ExVivo Labs, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grobo.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Grobo<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/majik.io\/\" target=\"_blank\">MAJiK Systems<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/goubiq.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ubiq<\/a> were awarded gigantic $25K cheques.<\/p>\n<p>Congrats to everyone involved.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Waterloo&#8217;s Velocity Fund was established in 2011 following a donation of $1 million by Kik founder and Velocity Residence alumnus Ted Livingston.
