{"id":63754,"date":"2015-07-30T02:07:00","date_gmt":"2015-07-30T10:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/?p=63754"},"modified":"2015-07-30T01:07:50","modified_gmt":"2015-07-30T09:07:50","slug":"federal-government-pouring-money-into-anti-cybercrime-plan","status":"publish","type":"magazine","link":"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/magazine\/federal-government-pouring-money-into-anti-cybercrime-plan","title":{"rendered":"Federal Government Pouring Money into Anti-Cybercrime Plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 11px 22px; float: right;\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/418\/19958555359_d79e33c10e_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"322\" height=\"189\" \/>The federal government says it will put an additional $142.6 million into its anti-cybercrime strategy over the next five years.<\/p>\n<p><!-- pagebreak --><\/p>\n<p>That money is intended to help protect private-sector computer systems, Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney <a href=\"http:\/\/news.gc.ca\/web\/article-en.do?mthd=advSrch&amp;crtr.page=1&amp;nid=1005009\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/ashley-madison-cyberterrorism-2015-07-20\" target=\"_blank\">hackers broke into Toronto-based AshleyMadison.com<\/a>, stealing private data and threatening to expose users of the site which helps people cheat on their partners.<\/p>\n<p>However, the new money <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Justin_Ling\/status\/624246187659366400\" target=\"_blank\">doesn&rsquo;t appear to be related<\/a> to that breach.<\/p>\n<p>The new money will go directly to Public Safety Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Communications <span class=\"il\">Security<\/span> Establishment (Canada&rsquo;s signals intelligence agency) and the Canadian <span class=\"il\">Security<\/span> Intelligence Service.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As long as our digital infrastructure continues to evolve, there will always be those who try to exploit vulnerabilities to undermine Canada&rsquo;s national <span class=\"il\">security<\/span>, public safety and economic prosperity,&rdquo; Blaney said. &ldquo;Collaboration and information-sharing with critical infrastructure sectors and private sector partners is our best defence to protect our essential <span class=\"il\">cyber<\/span> systems.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Among the programs the money is intended to support is a dedicated RCMP team that will investigate &ldquo;high-priority cybercrime.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Also in the works is a real-time notification system that will be used by the Canadian <span class=\"il\">Cyber<\/span> Incident Response Centre to notify the private sector about digital threats.<\/p>\n<p>The money will also be used to create the &ldquo;Regional Resilience Assessment Program,&rdquo; which will see Public Safety Canada conduct assessments of the overall <span class=\"il\">cyber<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"il\">security<\/span> level of businesses and organizations in the banking, telecommunications, energy and utilities sectors.<\/p>\n<p>John Manley, the CEO of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives, was present at the announcement and said he welcomes the new money.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<span class=\"il\">Cyber<\/span> <span class=\"il\">security<\/span> is a shared responsibility, so I am pleased about this important step forward to enhance our collaboration with the Federal Government on this important issue. These advancements to the Strategy will ensure our essential systems have the latest threat information, as well as help us to continue to build on each other&rsquo;s strengths,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement brings federal funding for <span class=\"il\">cyber<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"il\">security<\/span> to $237 million over the next five years.<\/p>\n<p>Though, with a federal election scheduled for October, that could change.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The federal government says it will put an additional $142.6 million into its anti-cybercrime strategy over the next five years.
