{"id":64072,"date":"2015-08-18T03:08:00","date_gmt":"2015-08-18T11:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/?p=64072"},"modified":"2015-08-18T02:08:44","modified_gmt":"2015-08-18T10:08:44","slug":"thoth-space","status":"publish","type":"magazine","link":"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/magazine\/thoth-space","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Company Secures Patent for &#8216;Space Elevator&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 11px 22px; float: right;\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/689\/20662787026_601db44de2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"340\" height=\"192\" \/>A Canadian company is developing a 20-kilometre-high &#8220;space elevator.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- pagebreak --><\/p>\n<p>The free-standing elevator, which Pembroke&#8217;s Thoth Technology <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/technology\/space-elevator-with-inflatable-tower-patented-by-thoth-technology-1.3194738\" target=\"_blank\">recently secured a US patent for<\/a>, could theoretically launch astronats into space.<\/p>\n<p>A team has been working on the concept since 2007.<\/p>\n<p>The elevator, say its creators, would offer a more energy-efficient method of exiting Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, a much smaller version&mdash;still 1.5km high&mdash;is planned to be built by <a href=\"http:\/\/thothx.com\" target=\"_blank\">Thoth<\/a> to test the concept.<\/p>\n<p>Space launches aren&#8217;t the only application for Thoth&#8217;s technology; the company suggests tourism, communications, and wind energy are all practical uses for such a structure.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t expect it anytime soon, however&mdash;the demonstration tower might not be complete for up to five years, and the project&#8217;s total cost could reach $13 billion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Canadian company is developing a 20-kilometre-high &#8220;space elevator.&#8221; The free-standing elevator, which Pembroke&#8217;s Thoth Technology recently secured a US patent for, could theoretically launch astronats into space.
