That was the original vision\u2014when the company was created, it was never intended to be a platform for e-commerce. The site <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/five-interesting-facts-you-probably-didnt-know-about-shopify-2014-12-01\" target=\"_blank\">didn&#8217;t even initially plan to create its own software<\/a> for the e-commerce side of things.<\/p>\n<p>The first iteration of Shopify (before it was called such) was an online store that sold snowboards. When Shopify was a store selling snowboards, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/five-interesting-facts-you-probably-didnt-know-about-shopify-2014-12-01\" target=\"_blank\">it was called Snowdevil<\/a>. When Shopify was first an e-commerce platform, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/five-interesting-facts-you-probably-didnt-know-about-shopify-2014-12-01\" target=\"_blank\">it was called Jaded Pixel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2006<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shopify as we know it today was founded in Ottawa by Tobias L\u00fctke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2009<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Retailers on Shopify&#8217;s platform <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/shopify-hits-100-million-in-sales-on-e-commerce-platform\" target=\"_blank\">net a combined total of $100 million in sales<\/a> since the company\u2019s shopping cart system launched in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, the company also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/shopify-offers-120000-in-prize-money-to-start-your-own-business\" target=\"_blank\">launched its annual Build-a-Business contest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2010<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Late in the year, Shopify <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/ottawas-shopify-raises-7-million-series-a-funding-from-bessemer-firstmark-and-felicis\" target=\"_blank\">raised a Series A round of financing<\/a> worth $7 million from\u00a0from Bessemer Venture Partners, FirstMark Capital and Felicis Ventures.\u00a0Alex Ferrara, a Bessemer partner, joined Shopify\u2019s board.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Shopify was processing $100 million in revenue for customers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5621\/20504549114_7436d9ecd5_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"74\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>2011<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Less than a year later, Shopify <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/ottawas-shopify-closes-15-million-series-b-round-2011-10-17\" target=\"_blank\">raised a Series B round<\/a>. The $15 million flush of capital came from Bessemer Venture Partners, FirstMark Capital, Felicis Ventures, and Georgian Partners.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, 15,000 active stores across 80 countries were powered by Shopify.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2012<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Profit Magazine named Shopify &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/canadas-smartest-company-2012-11-29\" target=\"_blank\">Canada&#8217;s Smartest Company<\/a>&#8221; in 2012. By the end of that year, Shopify\u2014with 150 employees at the time\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/canadas-smartest-company-2012-11-29\" target=\"_blank\">had grown to 40,000 stores<\/a> across 90 countries selling $740 million worth of product.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, Shopify was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/canadian-startup-award-finalists-2013-01-07\" target=\"_blank\">a finalist for Startup of the Year<\/a> in the Canadian Startup Awards. Founder L\u00fctke was a finalist for Entrepreneur of the Year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite its constantly increasing size, Shopify works hard <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/shopify-startup-culture-2013-03-27\" target=\"_blank\">to maintain a startup-like culture<\/a>. In the summer of 2013, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/shopify-acquires-jet-cooper-2013-08-01\" target=\"_blank\">Shopify acquired Jet Cooper<\/a>,a design and user experience agency based in Toronto,\u00a0&#8220;to rapidly expand operations in Toronto, while strengthening [Shopify&#8217;s] design and UX capabilities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In December of 2013, Shopify <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/shopify-100-million-2013-12-11\" target=\"_blank\">raised a massive $100 million Series C round<\/a>. The round included existing investors Bessemer Venture Partners, FirstMark Capital, Felicis Ventures, and Georgian Partners, and as joined by Omers Ventures and New York&#8217;s Insight Ventures Partners. The capital was used to transition the company from being an e-commerce platform to being a commerce platform.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/782\/20939071090_edfa75d91b_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"125\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By the start of this new year, Shopify <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/shopify-year-in-review-2014-01-22\" target=\"_blank\">had more than 80,000 customers<\/a> who combined more than $1.6 billion in sales in 2013. With over 300 employees, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/hootsuite-shopify-ipo-2014-03-13\" target=\"_blank\">rumours of a Shopify IPO<\/a> started swirling.<\/p>\n<p>Shopify&#8217;s market value, by year&#8217;s end, was estimated to be $1 billion. It <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/100000-businesses-now-use-shopifys-e-commerce-platform-2014-04-24\" target=\"_blank\">had 100,000 stores<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/shopify-employs-over-500-and-upgrades-phone-services-with-ottawa-provider-2014-10-07\" target=\"_blank\">500 employees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/startup-awards-winners-2015-01-26\" target=\"_blank\">Crowned Employer of the Year<\/a> in the 2014 Canadian Startup Awards, Shopify started the new year by showing off impressive numbers for 2014: 140,000 stores, $3.7 billion in sales, and massive growth in mobile commerce. It was soon after named <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/tech-dominates-list-of-canadas-most-innovative-companies-2015-03-23\" target=\"_blank\">one of Canada&#8217;s most innovative companies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QYl8iwD-6tk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>But the company&#8217;s biggest news this year has been its initial public offering, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/shopify-files-for-ipo-2015-04-14\" target=\"_blank\">which it filed for in April<\/a>. The company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/shopify-doubles-revenue-2015-07-30\" target=\"_blank\">went public in May<\/a>, raising $131 million, valuing Shopify has $1.3 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Shopify <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/shopify-doubles-revenue-2015-07-30\" target=\"_blank\">generated $45 million during its first quarter<\/a> as a public company, doubled from the year-ago quarter. For all of 2015, the company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/shopify-doubles-revenue-2015-07-30\" target=\"_blank\">forecasts generating $182 million in revenue<\/a>, losing $22 million. Shopify posted $105 million in revenue in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Harley Finkelstein, the company&#8217;s chief platform officer, told CBC News that &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/shopify-doubles-revenue-2015-07-30\" target=\"_blank\">we want to build a company for the next 100 years<\/a>,&#8221; which is not common among Canadian companies, who often get acquired by larger US firms before ever approaching IPO territory.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This original series documents the stories of Canada&#8217;s modern tech companies from inception to today. 2004 Before Shopify was a platform for creating online stores, it was an online store itself.
