Lau was also developing a a mobile reading platform in his spare time on his Nokia phone, a device which displayed just five lines of text at once.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2006<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wattpad was cofounded by Lau and Yuen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/fellow-entrepreneurs-could-learn-a-lot-from-wattpads-long-term-proudly-canadian-approach-2012-07-25\" target=\"_blank\">in November 2006 in a garage<\/a> &#8220;with a vision to change the way we share stories.&#8221; The idea behind the company was that readers could download an app to read and chat about fiction shared by professional and aspiring writers from around the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2007<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wattpad&#8217;s idea for digital reading came before the Kindle and the iPhone. &#8220;We knew that the paper format would become obsolete,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/fellow-entrepreneurs-could-learn-a-lot-from-wattpads-long-term-proudly-canadian-approach-2012-07-25\" target=\"_blank\">Lau recalled<\/a>. &#8220;We knew people would read digitally. Exactly how\u2014it was kind of fuzzy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2010<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wattpad bootstrapped for more than three years before quietly raising a modest seed round.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2011<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2011, Wattpad <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/torontos-wattpad-counts-one-million-users-2011-09-02\" target=\"_blank\">hit one million users<\/a>. Its app had five million downloads supporting 1,000 phone models from 600 mobile operators.<\/p>\n<p>In the fall, the Toronto company raised a $3.5 million Series A round from Union Square Ventures, Golden Venture Partners, and W Media Ventures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2012<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wattpad won Best Overall Canadian Startup of 2011 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/announcing-the-winners-of-the-first-annual-canadian-startup-awards-2012-01-20\" target=\"_blank\">the Canadian Startup Awards<\/a> to start 2012. The company announced users were spending <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/wattpad-hits-one-billion-user-minutes-a-month-2012-02-10\" target=\"_blank\">a billion minutes on the service<\/a> per month.<\/p>\n<p>In the summer, Wattpad raised $17.3 million. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/wattpad-raises-173-million-in-series-b-funding-led-by-khosla-ventures-2012-06-06\" target=\"_blank\">The Series B round<\/a> was led by Khosla Ventures of San Francisco and included Jerry Yang, co-founder of Yahoo, with existing partners Union Square Ventures and Golden Venture Partners also participating. Omers Ventures <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/canadian-startup-wattpad-raises-series-b-funding-round-from-omers-ventures-2012-09-18\" target=\"_blank\">later joined this round<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>PwC <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/pwc-announces-canadas-innovators-of-the-year-2012-11-08\" target=\"_blank\">awarded Wattpad<\/a> the 2012 Innovator of the Year Award.\u00a0The Canadian Innovation Exchange named it one of the year&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/cix-crowd-names-canadas-two-hottest-companies-2012-11-27\" target=\"_blank\">most innovative companies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/1\/735\/21224682034_629c1d4f78_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"122\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wattpad celebrated its seventh birthday by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/wattpad-celebrates-seventh-birthday-with-launch-of-new-feature-called-stories-2013-11-05\" target=\"_blank\">launching a new feature<\/a> called Stories, which profiles people whose lives have been transformed by stories.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Seven years ago we had a few hundred stories on Wattpad; today we have more than 28 million uploads and we&#8217;re on track to surpass the total number of books that have been published since the advent of printing,&#8221; said Lau.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the spring of 2014, the Canadian company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/wattpad-raises-series-c-omers-ventures-2014-04-08\" target=\"_blank\">raised $46 million in Series C funding<\/a> led by Omers Ventures with participation from August Capital, Raine Ventures, and Northleaf Venture Catalyst Fund. All of Wattpad\u2019s existing investors also participated in the round.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, more than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/wattpad-raises-series-c-omers-ventures-2014-04-08\" target=\"_blank\">25 million people spent upward of six billion minutes<\/a> per month on Wattpad. In 2014, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/mobile-novel-writing-2014-12-19\" target=\"_blank\">20 billion words<\/a> were written on iOS and Android devices.<\/p>\n<p>Eight years and four rounds offunding it, Wattpad <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/entrepreneur-of-the-year-finalist-allen-lau-2015-01-20\" target=\"_blank\">started monetizing its platform<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lau <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/entrepreneur-of-the-year-finalist-allen-lau-2015-01-20\" target=\"_blank\">was one the finalists<\/a> for Entrepreneur of the Year in the Canadian Startup awards, while Wattpad was a finalist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/entrepreneur-of-the-year-finalist-allen-lau-2015-01-20\" target=\"_blank\">for employer of the year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the turn of the year, users were spending a combined 11 billion minutes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/wattpad-milestone-2015-02-03\" target=\"_blank\">on the platform<\/a>. Now they spend 13 billion minutes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Before the iPhone, before Kindle and before the rise of ebooks and self-publishing, there was Wattpad,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techvibes.com\/blog\/wattpad-celebrates-seventh-birthday-with-launch-of-new-feature-called-stories-2013-11-05\" target=\"_blank\">Yuen once said.<\/a> &#8220;It&#8217;s incredible to have created a platform that empowers people to read, write and socialize in a way fits their mobile lifestyle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Today, Wattpad employs 115 workers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This original series documents the stories of Canada&#8217;s modern tech companies from inception to today. 2002 Allen Lau and Ivan Yuen started building a mobile gaming company called Tira Wireless.
