{"id":68811,"date":"2016-06-21T05:00:39","date_gmt":"2016-06-21T12:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/52.40.65.116\/?p=68811"},"modified":"2016-06-20T23:21:04","modified_gmt":"2016-06-21T06:21:04","slug":"mapping-our-brains-is-a-big-data-challenge","status":"publish","type":"magazine","link":"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/magazine\/mapping-our-brains-is-a-big-data-challenge","title":{"rendered":"Mapping Our Brains is a Big Data Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The research team that helped spearhead <a href=\"https:\/\/bigbrain.loris.ca\/main.php?test_name=bigbrain&amp;slice=3702\">the international brain-mapping project<\/a> known as BigBrain is about to get a boost in its effort to produce higher-resolution brain maps, thanks to technology from EMC.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/\">McGill University<\/a> in Montreal will establish a research-and-development centre that will serve as a test bed to adapt EMC Isilon scale-out NAS for visualization and data-storage technology to support the complex needs of leading-edge neuroscience. The new centre will be expanded in coming years to encompass research across the university, reflecting the increased role of Big Data in research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEMC\u2019s next-generation technologies, being harnessed by McGill University, provides researchers an advanced and agile foundation for healthcare and life sciences professionals to store, protect, share, and analyze their most valuable asset: information,\u201d said Mike Sharun, EMC Corporation of Canada Country Manager.<\/p>\n<p>Developing a fuller understanding of the brain\u2019s circuitry represents a huge challenge, with an estimated 100 billion neurons in the brain and 1,000 trillion neuronal connections (10,000 per neuron) triggering thoughts and actions. mprove brain health in Canada and around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA single high-resolution dataset for a full brain now requires over 200 terabytes of disk space for raw data alone,\u201d says Alan Evans, the McGill brain-imaging expert who worked with European scientists to produce the BigBrain map. \u201cEMC\u2019s storage and visualization technologies will help us take brain imaging to the next level \u2013 from the equivalent of old fashioned street maps to Google Earth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emc.com\/en-us\/index.htm\">EMC\u2019s work with McGill<\/a> also promises to bolster brain research across Canada.
