{"id":69572,"date":"2016-07-06T13:00:38","date_gmt":"2016-07-06T20:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/techvibes.com\/?p=69572"},"modified":"2016-07-06T14:15:01","modified_gmt":"2016-07-06T21:15:01","slug":"comparison-us-canada-report","status":"publish","type":"magazine","link":"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/magazine\/comparison-us-canada-report","title":{"rendered":"Average Financing Size in Canada One-Third of That in US, and Other Woeful Comparisons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Access to capital, talent and markets are the three key drivers of Canada\u2019s innovation ecosystem. <a href=\"http:\/\/yaletown.com\" target=\"_blank\">Yaletown Partners<\/a> today released a detailed study on Canada\u2019s financing activity, which reveals significant gaps in capital available for the country\u2019s technology companies.<\/p>\n<p>The report, &#8220;Canada\u2019s Technology Investment Gap,&#8221; shows that gaps in Canada\u2019s capital supply cause Canadian companies to scale more slowly, take longer to exit, and achieve smaller outcomes than U.S. technology peers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe took a comprehensive look at technology financing in Canada, looking not just at stage of financing or size, but at the impact of capital flow over time,\u201d said Eric Bukovinsky, Principal, Yaletown Partners. \u201cWe found that the capital supply in Canada is both insufficient and inadequately distributed beyond early stage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-69577\" src=\"https:\/\/borndigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Screen-Shot-2016-07-06-at-9.04.59-AM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-07-06 at 9.04.59 AM\" width=\"3612\" height=\"2012\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, the average financing size for Canadian companies is less than one-third of the level in the United States. And companies in the United States are 2.6x more likely to raise $5 to $25 million emerging growth financings.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-69575\" src=\"https:\/\/borndigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Screen-Shot-2016-07-06-at-9.04.44-AM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-07-06 at 9.04.44 AM\" width=\"2928\" height=\"1430\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since 2000, disclosed exits in Canada valued at greater than $100 million raise on average 50% less capital compared to those in the United States, the report shows. And exits valued between $100 and 250 million take 2.5 years longer and are half as frequent as in the United States.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-69576\" src=\"https:\/\/borndigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Screen-Shot-2016-07-06-at-9.04.50-AM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-07-06 at 9.04.50 AM\" width=\"3616\" height=\"1664\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since 2000, large exits (greater than $500 million) have occurred in 1% of all disclosed Canadian exits versus 10% in the United States, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-69578\" src=\"https:\/\/borndigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Screen-Shot-2016-07-06-at-9.05.12-AM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-07-06 at 9.05.12 AM\" width=\"2778\" height=\"1206\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For the study, Yaletown reviewed over 20,000 financings in the decade since 2006 and 3,000 exits since 2000 across Canada and the United States.
