STAT Search Analytics<\/a> is a fast-growing\u00a0Vancouver startup that’s standing out from from its peers. The fully bootstrapped business was founded by artist turned self-taught programmer Rob Bucci whose first real project built the company\u2019s backbone.<\/p>\n

While finding his footing in the marketing field, Bucci built a tool to track search rankings and fell into an analytics business. When the CEO\u00a0realized the product he developed had legs, he started selling his idea to big brands\u2014that was before he had a business plan.<\/p>\n

Launched in 2009, STAT Search Analytics equips SEO professionals with fresh location-based\u00a0search data from browsers like Google and Bing. From a cloud-based application, users can track search content and measure performance through SERP (search engine result page) analytics including where they rank and where their competition ranks. This data is what STAT calls a “treasure trove” and leads companies to gaining a competitive edge in search. Today, STAT is a\u00a0data partner to\u00a0some of the world\u2019s largest online brands and SEO agencies, including Pinterest, eBay and iProspect.<\/p>\n

Now STAT is stepping up their SEO\u00a0game at their new Railtown headquarters in the city’s industrial east end. Nestled at the corner of Alexander and Heatley, the Vancouver\u00a0firm moved to their new digs in April 2016. Since then, they\u2019ve almost doubled their team\u00a0to 40 people and\u00a0the numbers are only rising<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Work<\/h2>\n

Next door to Roundhouse Radio, the 10,000 square-foot space was originally a tile manufacturing facility. Vancouver’s DIALOG<\/a>\u00a0interior design team revived\u00a0the empty space into a chic industrial two-storey office that reflects the company\u2019s spirit: creative, energetic and youthful.<\/p>\n

Two\u00a0features that are hard to miss is a glass orb pendant lighting fixtures that extends through a stairwell\u00a0connecting both floors, and a red and yellow tiled mosaic that spells Hello, World\u2014the\u00a0first thing you learn to code in Java.<\/p>\n

The main floor is where work gets done. A combination of\u00a0open-concept desk clumps and\u00a0breakout rooms create a balanced work environment that champions teamwork, collaboration and productivity. Enclosed work spaces boast tables for four, livened\u00a0up by a\u00a0punch of colourful artwork\u2014commissioned by local artist\u00a0Lucien Durey\u2014and exposed Edison bulb lighting hanging\u00a0from the ceiling.<\/p>\n

The artwork in each work space was made using archival photos from the office’s surrounding five block radius that were set behind colourful Plexi-glass.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Pulling colours from the company’s sacred octagon brand graphics, splashes of soft canary yellow are found throughout the office\u2014from benches to backsplash\u2014and sea blue compliments a polygon-patterned wall.<\/p>\n

A 2,000 square-foot mixed used mezzanine overlooks the office in all of its geometric glory. Primarily a\u00a0communal space with modular\u00a0furniture, the mezzanine\u00a0is the hub of STAT activity from team socializing\u00a0to event hosting. It’s also where STAT hold their monthly company-wide meetings.<\/p>\n

Instead of going\u00a0tongue-and-cheek, STAT went with a pretty novel idea for naming their work spaces: numbers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The space also hosts Inbound Marketing YVR, a meet-up every two months open to all Vancouver-area inbound marketing professionals. These events feature guest speakers, a Q&A, finger food and a whole lot of mingling. The Inbound community has grown to 200-plus members. STAT also recently launched a Data Pipelines & Distributed Systems meet-up, a pizza fuelled night of mini-talks.<\/p>\n

Food<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In the middle of the kitchen, a large island is a focal point on the second floor and brings the team\u00a0together to eat and drink. With one craft beer and two wines on tap, both employees and guests are set for happy hour. The well-stocked kitchen has tons of snacks. It’s not uncommon for birthday cupcakes, ice cream sundae bars and baked treats to appear\u00a0on the island\u2014or sometimes a casual roast beef.<\/p>\n

STAT\u00a0takes coffee very seriously. The espresso machine is a lifeline for the office:\u00a0on average 1,125 cups are downed each month. This is complemented by coffee tastings and and even a\u00a0lunch & learn featuring local\u00a0Matchstick\u00a0<\/a>brews.<\/p>\n

Culture<\/h2>\n

STAT is driven by seven company values that they encourage all their employees to embrace: craft, harmony, ambition & adventure, empathy, leadership, selflessness, and levity. These values mean they put people first; e<\/span>ncourage each other to always be producing their\u00a0best work while recognizing that “like a majestic heavy metal orchestra” their best work is done together.\u00a0<\/span>The company wants their team to push the boundaries and\u00a0feel comfortable letting “your freak flag fly”.<\/p>\n

STAT\u00a0endorses fun, saying if it’s not being had,\u00a0something is seriously wrong. The company supports this mantra with some significant perks: Summer F<\/span>ridays are shortened to\u00a0six-hour work day and every STAT staffer enjoys a free gym membership and<\/span>\u00a0transit subsidy.\u00a0The company also donates to charities submitted by staff each month, matching staff donations dollar-for-dollar. Last year, STAT donated $1,000\u00a0to 12 charities. This year, they’re handing out 11 $1,000 donations and giving one\u00a0charity a $12,000 donation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fun<\/h2>\n

Ping pong matches, board game battles, and\u00a0Friday afternoon video game tournaments are some of the startup staples at STAT.\u00a0<\/span>The dog friendly office has attracted some furry mainstays who have a tendency to steal loose ping pong balls.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s no surprise that a data company would keep data on themselves. They’ve had 250 team lunches so far (beer count not included), clothed 4,500 people with STAT branded shirts, and have taken their team to one epic group outing to Elite Canadian Championship Wrestling.<\/p>\n
