Shopify hit another milestone Tuesday, announcing that they now power more than 500,000 merchants in 175 countries.<\/p>\n
In the last five years, the number of entrepreneurs using the multi-channel commerce platform has grown\u00a0on average 74 per cent each year. To date, Shopify-powered businesses have made $40 billion in sales.<\/p>\n
Shopify CEO Tobi L\u00fctke said the platform has allowed\u00a0over half a million entrepreneurs to turn their dreams into reality.<\/p>\n
\u201cEntrepreneurship is the foundation of the global economy and it’s not easily done alone. That\u2019s why our mission has always been to make commerce better for everyone to encourage anyone, anywhere to become an entrepreneur,\u201d said L\u00fctke\u00a0in a press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n This announcement came the same morning Shopify posted strong second-quarter earnings<\/a>. The\u00a0Ottawa-based company reported\u00a0a revenue of $151.7 million, up 75 per cent for the same period last year. They beat analysts’ estimates for the quarter and said they are now expecting their 2017\u00a0revenue to top $648 million.<\/p>\n For the second quarter, Shopify saw the largest merchant growth year over year in South America with a 168 per cent increase in\u00a0the region.\u00a0They\u00a0also reported that more women\u00a0entrepreneurs than men have built their businesses on\u00a0the platform, 52 per cent compared to 47 per cent\u00a0respectively.<\/p>\n Shopify\u00a0also announced<\/a>\u00a0that their\u00a0Chip & Swipe Reader\u2014a pocket-sized card reader\u00a0for wireless payments\u2014is now available to all US Shopify merchants.
