{"id":89574,"date":"2017-08-17T11:47:53","date_gmt":"2017-08-17T15:47:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/techvibes.com\/?p=89574"},"modified":"2017-08-20T18:01:30","modified_gmt":"2017-08-20T22:01:30","slug":"tech-giants-take-action-following-charlottesville-rallies","status":"publish","type":"magazine","link":"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/magazine\/tech-giants-take-action-following-charlottesville-rallies","title":{"rendered":"Tech Giants Take Action Following Charlottesville Rallies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>White supremacists,\u00a0neo-Nazis, and the KKK\u00a0rallied together in\u00a0Charlottesville to protest the removal of a Confederate statue this past weekend, and clashes between the alt-right and counter-protesters resulted in deadly violence.<\/p>\n<p>The response by President Donald Trump\u2014who has blamed &#8220;both sides&#8221; for the violence\u2014has caused political unrest in the United States after he initially failed to firmly condemn the hate groups.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump folded his manufacturing advisory council yesterday after many high-profile CEOs resigned from the Strategic and Policy Forum, including IBM&#8217;s Ginni Rometty, General Electric&#8217;s Jack Welch, and Intel&#8217;s Brian Krzanich.<\/p>\n<p>Global leaders in the tech industry haven&#8217;t shied away from taking a strong stance against racism and\u00a0have reacted by shutting down sites, music and other services\u00a0involved with white supremacy, among other actions.<\/p>\n<p>The following list is a selection of the companies and some of the actions taken\u00a0in response to the events last weekend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Apple<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Apple CEO Tim Cook told employees in a letter\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/charliewarzel\/read-apple-ceo-tim-cooks-email-to-employees-about?utm_term=.vsY9memXW#.bhZAn8nKl\" target=\"_blank\">obtained by BuzzFeed News<\/a> that\u00a0he disagreed with the US president drawing a moral equivalence between the hate groups and counter protesters. Cook called for employees to stand together for equality and pledged two\u00a0$1 million donations to the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League.<\/p>\n<p>Apple also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/ryanmac\/apple-removes-payments-support-from-white-nationalist?utm_term=.deN7VjVev#.eswdZnZQr\" target=\"_blank\">confirmed to BuzzFeed<\/a> that it had disabled Apple Pay on websites selling alt-right merchandise.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Facebook<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Facebook&#8217;s Mark Zuckerberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/zuck\/posts\/10103969849282011?pnref=story\" target=\"_blank\">took to his platform<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday to affirm that the company will continue to take down posts that promote or celebrate hate crimes and terrorism, stating\u00a0&#8220;there is no place for hate in our community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With the potential for more rallies, we&#8217;re watching the situation closely and will take down threats of physical harm. We won&#8217;t always be perfect, but you have my commitment that we&#8217;ll keep working to make Facebook a place where everyone can feel safe,&#8221; said Zuckerberg.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Kantrowitz\/status\/897525520178397185?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bustle.com%2Fp%2Ffacebook-is-taking-down-racist-hate-pages-after-the-violence-in-charlottesville-76891\" target=\"_blank\">told\u00a0BuzzFeed&#8217;s Alex Kantrowitz<\/a> that it had removed eight\u00a0pages run by white supremacists from the social media platform.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reddit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Reddit banned\u00a0the subreddit r\/Physical_Removal after commenters discussed acts of violence and even suggested they murder Liberals, clearly\u00a0violating the sites terms of service.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are very clear in our site terms of service that posting content that incites violence will get users banned from Reddit,&#8221; said a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/reddit-facebook-bans-neo-nazi-groups-charlottesville-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\">spokesperson to CNET<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spotify<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Spotify\u00a0took action too, removing hate music by white supremacist from the streaming service. These hate bands were first identified by the\u00a0Southern Poverty Law Center\u00a0three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are glad to have been alerted to this content and have already removed many of the bands identified today, whilst urgently reviewing the remainder,&#8221; said Spotify\u00a0in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/biz\/articles\/news\/digital-and-mobile\/7905179\/spotify-removes-hate-music-as-streaming-companies?utm_medium=twitter&amp;utm_source=dlvr.it\" target=\"_blank\">a statement to Billboard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Airbnb<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the lead up to Saturday,\u00a0Airbnb shut down the\u00a0accounts of users\u00a0linked to white nationalism and canceled bookings tied to the &#8220;Unite the Right&#8221; rally.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The violence, racism, and hatred demonstrated by Neo-Nazis, the alt-right, and white supremacists should have no place in this world,&#8221; wrote Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky in a statement. &#8220;Airbnb will continue to stand for acceptance and we will continue to do all we can to enforce our community commitment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>GoDaddy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Monday, both GoDaddy and Google disabled hosting services for the Daily Stormer, which has also since been dropped by CloudFare who protects sites from denial-of-service attacks. Google also blocked the Daily Stormer&#8217;s YouTube account.<\/p>\n<p>The neo-Nazi website published an offensive story about 32-year-old\u00a0Heather Heyer who was killed in Charlottesville after a white nationalist ran\u00a0his car into a crowd of counter protesters. The most recent attempt at keeping the website alive was through a Russian hosting service, but it was suspended once again. Hackers have\u00a0currently taken the website offline.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PayPal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>PayPal assured the public they cut off payment service to both individuals and groups that promote hate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Regardless of the individual or organization in question, we\u00a0work to ensure that\u00a0our services\u00a0are not\u00a0used to accept payments or donations for activities that promote hate, violence or racial intolerance,&#8221; the digital payments leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paypal.com\/stories\/us\/paypals-aup-remaining-vigilant-on-hate-violence-intolerance\" target=\"_blank\">wrote in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>White supremacists,\u00a0neo-Nazis, and the KKK\u00a0rallied together in\u00a0Charlottesville to protest the removal of a Confederate statue this past weekend, and clashes between the alt-right and counter-protesters resulted in deadly violence.
