{"id":90444,"date":"2017-08-25T17:28:55","date_gmt":"2017-08-25T21:28:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/techvibes.com\/?p=90444"},"modified":"2017-08-26T18:15:52","modified_gmt":"2017-08-26T22:15:52","slug":"canadian-engineering-student-develops-3d-printed-bones-for-safer-surgery","status":"publish","type":"magazine","link":"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/magazine\/canadian-engineering-student-develops-3d-printed-bones-for-safer-surgery","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Engineering Student Develops 3D-Printed Bones for Safer Surgery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The current method for bone replacement surgery\u2014to take\u00a0a graft from elsewhere and transplant it\u2014may become a thing of the past if new 3D-printed technology can come to market.<\/p>\n<p>Research from the University of British Columbia&#8217;s Okanagan campus has demonstrated the use of patient-specific bone printing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, the doctors use bone from another site of the body, which needs second surgery and with that comes risk of infection,&#8221; engineering student Hossein Montazerian explained <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metronews.ca\/news\/vancouver\/2017\/08\/24\/ubc-researcher-designs-3d-printed-bones.html\">to Metro News<\/a>. \u201cBy 3D printing, we are going to design a new technology, a new approach in which the doctor takes the images of the damaged bone and then the doctor designs the bone that is required for the specific patient.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Three-dimensional\u00a0bone printing involves the use of a texture that mimics natural bone structure; it&#8217;s porous enough for bone cells to grow, ultimately creating a hybrid bone in the body that is part artificial and part natural, according to Montazerian.<\/p>\n<p>If implemented, the student&#8217;s solution could aid people suffering from a variety of health issues, including bone cancer and osteoporosis.<\/p>\n<p>Montazerian believes 3D-printed bones could become a healthcare reality within half a decade.
