{"id":95305,"date":"2017-10-20T11:00:16","date_gmt":"2017-10-20T15:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/techvibes.com\/?p=95305"},"modified":"2017-10-20T12:25:48","modified_gmt":"2017-10-20T16:25:48","slug":"google-facebook-and-others-unite-to-lobby-for-dreamers","status":"publish","type":"magazine","link":"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/magazine\/google-facebook-and-others-unite-to-lobby-for-dreamers","title":{"rendered":"Google, Facebook and Others Unite to Lobby for &#8216;Dreamers&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Google, Microsoft, Facebook and nearly 20 other top U.S. companies are teaming up to launch a coalition to fight for young illegal immigrants facing deportation under the Trump administration, according to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-immigration-dreamers\/exclusive-tech-companies-to-lobby-for-immigrant-dreamers-to-remain-in-u-s-idUSKBN1CP03Z\" target=\"_blank\">a report in Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An Obama-era program called DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, allowed undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children to obtain work permits.\u00a0In September, President Donald Trump said the\u00a0program will start expiring\u00a0in March 2018,\u00a0making the nearly 800,000 people protected under DACA\u2014known as Dreamers\u2014vulnerable to\u00a0deportation.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s up to the U.S. Congress to pass legislation to grant Dreamers\u00a0temporary or permanent legal immigration status.\u00a0\u00a0A new coalition formed by technology giants and other industry leaders wants to make that happen.<\/p>\n<p>A plan is being outlined by the newly formed Coalition for the American Dream, comprised of roughly two dozen U.S. companies, to\u00a0ask Congress to pass bipartisan legislation this year that would allow\u00a0Dreamers to continue working in the country, according to documents seen by Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>While spokespeople from Intel and Uber confirmed their involvement to Reuters, it&#8217;s no surprise to see some of the country&#8217;s technology giants team up to lobby Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft President Brad Smith urged Congress to act fast when the decision to end DACA was first announced.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We believe this means that Congress now needs to reprioritize the fall legislative calendar\u2026 Congress should adopt legislation on DACA before it tries to adopt a tax reform bill,\u201d wrote Smith in a September\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/on-the-issues\/2017\/09\/05\/urgent-daca-legislation-economic-imperative-humanitarian-necessity\/\" target=\"_blank\">blog post.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Facebook CEO\u00a0Mark Zuckerberg called the decision &#8220;cruel&#8221; and said\u00a0it&#8217;s up to Congress to \u201cshow that our government can make important things happen.\u201d\u00a0Zuckerberg co-founded a pro-immigration group\u00a0called\u00a0FWD.us that&#8217;s penned two open letters to Congress about DACA&#8217;s termination.<\/p>\n<p>In one letter, the bipartisan organization\u00a0wrote that at least 72 per cent of the top 25 Fortune 500 companies count DACA recipients among their employees.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Google, Microsoft, Facebook and nearly 20 other top U.S. companies are teaming up to launch a coalition to fight for young illegal immigrants facing deportation under the Trump administration, according to\u00a0a report in Reuters.
