The federal government is tapping the head of one of Canada\u2019s most innovative companies for guidance on how the country can\u00a0attract technology jobs.<\/p>\n
Shopify announced its CEO Tobi L\u00fctke as one of six industry leaders chairing economic strategy tables. L\u00fctke will lead\u00a0the digital industries group over the next six months, bringing together\u00a0a team of 15 to develop policy recommendations to\u00a0double down on\u00a0business growth in the technology sector.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIf you take a look at the Toronto Stock Exchange there are only a handful of tech companies listed. This is disappointing but also presents a great opportunity,\u201d said L\u00fctke in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe need to break from convention, be bold, and define a path where innovation rives the future of our country, and our economy,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n L\u00fctke has steered his Ottawa-headquartered e-commerce company through a high-growth track that isn’t slowing down. The federal government is looking to L\u00fctke and the digital industries group to develop an immediate and long-term action plan to propel Canada into the future.<\/p>\n \u201cIt’s funny to think of a country as a startup, but Canada feels like one. We\u2019re still a very young country, full of raw potential. If we play our cards right, the future will be bright. I accepted this role because I want to help the government to get this right and share some of the lessons we\u2019ve learned at Shopify,\u201d L\u00fctke\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Leaders of the five other industry-specific groups\u00a0were previously announced, sectors that include\u00a0advanced manufacturing and clean technology.
