Design Evenings TO:How Float Rebuilt Their Design Process Without Figma
Join us for an evening with Greg Rogers, Head of Design at Float, as he explores how a high-growth company reimagined its entire design workflow. Greg will share how Float built "Surf," an internal prototyping tool that’s replaced Figma by designing directly with production code — without sacrificing quality.
Design and code used to be two separate worlds, but that gap is quickly collapsing. Designers find themselves awkwardly bouncing between the canvas and code instead of leaning into the shift. Greg Rogers will unpack what it takes to build conviction to solve design problems directly in code and keep pace with the velocity it demands.

Head of Design
Greg leads the design team at Float, where they’re building the future of finance for Canadian businesses. Previously, Greg led design at Top Hat, shipping features used by millions of professors and students. Before that, Greg helped scale Deloitte Canada’s design practice with clients like TD Wealth, Loblaws, and Via Rail. Greg loves teaching design and has guest lectured at OCAD, Ivey Business School, and Smith School of Business. Outside of work, Greg has been modernizing a 130-year-old Toronto row house — it’s never done.

Event Overview
Greg Rogers shares the inside story of how Float transitioned their design team away from Figma and embraced designing in code. He explores the challenges of driving adoption and demonstrates how their new tool, Surf, accelerates design velocity while keeping quality high.
01
The Ideation and Build
Trace design's messy history with code and learn why Float built Surf from scratch instead of force-fitting an off-the-shelf tool.
02
Navigating the Transition and Adoption
See how Float made exploring ideas with production code feel fluid instead of sloppy, with shareable links, embedded comments, and templates that skip the boilerplate. Learn what it took to build a tool designers default to for everything.
03
Surf in Action: A Live Demo
Learn how Surf works behind the scenes and walk through real case studies of features conceptualized, explored, and handed off entirely without Figma.
