Android Pioneer Andy Rubin Founds Essential, a New Phone Company

Andy Rubin, effectively responsible for Android, the world’s most popular mobile operating system, has launched a new company.

Called Essential, the company’s flagship product is a phone, which some have already taken to calling the “anti-iPhone.”

“We are bringing real passion and craftsmanship back into this category,” says Rubin, founder of Playground Global, a venture studio that provides resources to startups working in hardware and artificial intelligence. “Devices shouldn’t become outdated every year. They should evolve with you.”

Rubin went into full-depth explaining why he created Essential during an interview at Code 2017, which can be watched above.
