DAZN Introduces New Streaming Service for NFL Games
As more consumers cut cable cords, many are left with blank screens when it comes to watching their favourite live sports. DAZN is trying to change that.
DAZN (pronounced “Da Zone”) has announced it is now the only place Canadians can access the National Football League (NFL) Game Pass, which allows fans to watch live football games, whether it be through smart TVs or streamed on mobile devices and desktop computers. The pass was previously accessible only through the NFL Sunday Ticket. NFL Game Pass is a direct-to-consumer digital subscription product that gives access to pre-season, regular season and playoff games, including the Super Bowl.
Access to playoff games has been something a few major sports streaming options have been lacking on, either charging additional costs or forcing viewers to sift through heavy blackout restrictions.
Subscriptions to DAZN will run $20 a month or $150 for a year at a “limited introductory price,” according to the release. On top of this, new subscribers will receive 30 days free.
In addition to NFL games, DAZN will also stream other sports for subscribers, with tennis, darts and billiards shown in the promotional video.
Monetizing the streaming of sports is a huge untapped industry that has not always been handled well. A report earlier this year from Sport Industry Group showed that over 50 per cent of young millennials have watched illegal streams of sports. In addition, Canadian viewership of NFL games is up for those between 18 and 35 years old.
DAZN is own by the UK-based Perform Group and is trying to become the “Netflix of sports.” It’s a lofty goal but they are on their way with this announcement.
