Is Montreal Home to the Next Instagram?
Is Montreal home to the next Instagram? According to Real Ventures’ JS Cournoyer, it may be.
At the 5:45 mark of the most recent episode of Venture Cap TV, Cournoyer tells host Kristina Tomaz-Young that Montreal startup Cinemagram is definitely not a fad. Cinemagram has “hundreds of thousands of members” and more than a million cinemagrams have been created to date.
The Cinemagram app can turn your iPhone photos into animated GIFs in a matter of seconds. The two-month old app was designed by Montreal startup called Factyle—which you may know as the makers of Smartr, the personalized, social newspaper app for iOS and desktop.
Factyle was co-founded by Teemoojin Chalasani and Marc Provost and raised $150,000 in seed funding in April 2011 from Cournoyer’s Real Ventures.
With Cinemagram’s numbers increasing daily and engagement levels high, Cournoyer may be right: “We may have our first big consumer web play in Montreal. Maybe the next Instagram is in Montreal.”
Cinemagram is avaialble in the Apple iTunes store and an Android version is in the works.
