Vancouver’s BuddyPress goes Automattic

Mashable is reporting that WordPress plug-in series BuddyPress is now under the Automattic umbrella in what looks to be a possible acquisition. BuddyPress is a product of Vancouver’s Blaze New Media and founder Andy Pealting has confirmed on his own blog that he’s now working for Automattic and is currently moving the BuddyPress site over to them.

BuddyPress is a series of plug-ins that allows you to turn a WordPress MU instillation into a fully functional social network. As Automattic has indicated that it would like to move into the realm of social networking from a platform perspective, it makes sense that it would look to a tool like BuddyPress, which has received praise across the web as a useful and easily implemented tool.

Automattic’s Matt Mullenweg alluded to a possible partnership with BuddyPress during his recent presentation at Northern Voice in Vancouver. Now the big question is, will a fully integrated release of BuddyPress will be available in time for the WordPress 2.5 version release?
