Wattpad Wins Best Tech Startup at Toronto Timmy Awards

Wattpad scooped up the top startup prize at the second annual Timmy Awards in Toronto last night.

Launched by Tech in Motion, the goal of the Timmy Awards is to recognize the best in technology work culture, management, startups and diversity incentives across North America.

In Toronto, the local community and an expert panel of judges selected from a pool of 40 finalists for awards including Best Tech Startup, Best Tech Manager, Best Tech Work Culture and Best Tech Workplace for Diversity.

Wattpad, a global multi-platform entertainment company, was crowned Best Tech Startup. Founded a decade ago, the company has recently rolled out new features to their storytelling apps and even launched their first video sharing platform dubbed Raccoon. In June, Wattpad opened Wattpad Labs, an innovation lab for emerging storytelling products.

Omnichannel advertising platform StackAdapt was the top startup runner-up.

The Timmy Awards also handed out their first ever Best Tech Workplace for Diversity award. Cetaris was honoured for their workplace diversity with Rangle.io coming in second.

“Diversity is not only a trending topic in tech but across all industries,” said Tech in Motion’s Mandy Walker. “Adding the Workplace for Diversity award recognizes and celebrates the companies who know that diversity isn’t just a trending term or requirement, but a key ingredient to the creativity and success of a company.”

As for best culture—one of the most talked about perks for those working in the tech industry—website designer Symbility Intersect received top honours, with TELUS Digital coming in second.

Awards were also handed out to individuals including DeepLearni.ng chief technology officer Victor Anjos who was selected as the best tech manager.

Timmy Awards are given out to companies in 10 cities across Canada and the United States.
