Wind Mobiles Launches Unlimited US Roaming Package for Only $15

Blowing the best efforts of the Big Three out of the water, discount carrier Wind Mobile has launched one of Canada’s most generous roaming packages ever.

For $15 per month, Wind offers customers on any of its plans unlimited data, talk, and text in the US (subject to the company’s “fair usage policy,” which restricts full-speed data to 5GB per month).

Comparing this deal to the Big Three of Rogers, Telus, and Bell: for $25, Telus customers can get 50 minutes of talk, 50 megabytes of data, and 150 outgoing texts in the US. And this is after the carrier slashed rates by 50% last year. Rogers meanwhile charges $300 for 500 minutes of talk-time, 1 gigabyte of data and unlimited sent text messages—a far cry from Wind’s $15 add-on.

“While wireless prices in the Canadian marketplace remain very high, we at Wind Mobile continue to challenge expectations and offer our customers real value,” Wind’s chief operating officer, Pietro Cordova, said in a statement.

The move is designed to both drive subscriber growth for Wind and force the Big Three to further reduce their roaming rates. However, ever wind Wind withdrew from this month’s government-issued wireless spectrum auction, potential customers are wary of Wind’s ability to expand coverage and improving existing coverage.

Wind currently has roughly 660,000 customers.
