Meet Stephanie Ortiz, an alum of BrainStation’s Digital Marketing Certificate Course, who has recently started a new position as a Client Specialist at MOZ, the Seatle-based SEO and local search platform provider.

Prior to landing this role, Stephanie had been working in the retail and public speaking industries (TEDx), but she had her sights set on a more technical role. To land that role, she decided that digital skills training at BrainStation would help get her capabilities to where they needed to be.

“The Digital Marketing course gave me a taste of every pillar of digital marketing during a time when I was thinking of applying for jobs in the tech industry,” she says. “It really helped me develop an understanding of digital marketing, its concepts, and the overall language used in the industry.”

Transitioning From Different Industries

Apart from building her digital skills and giving her hands-on experience with key platforms and tools, the certificate course also helped Stephanie feel confident enough to make the jump into a new field.

“Coming from various other industries, I was starting to reevaluate which industry would consistently present a lot of opportunities and that would keep me interested and on my toes,” Stephanie explains. “This led me to seriously think about switching over to the tech industry and SEO, which is particularly exciting because it’s constantly evolving.”

SEO is constantly evolving, but it is also just one example of how much technology is changing, and how quickly required skills and competencies can shift. When transitioning between industries, it’s important to understand what skills are needed for your desired industry, organization, and role, and this was essential in Stephanie’s case.

“I [had] been searching for the right job for over a year and started to consider targeting the tech industry for a while,” she says. “I started working for MOZ and felt confident making [that] professional change now that I can speak the language and understand the basics.”

Applying Her Skills at Moz

As a Client Specialist at Moz, Stephanie has been able to apply the skills and knowledge gained at BrainStation on a daily basis.

“I help our enterprise and agency clients when they’re experiencing any issues with the STAT application. This involves answering any of their questions about the app, setting them up with additional training with our in-house coaches, testing new features, and reporting any issues to the Product and Development teams,” she says.

As part of this process, Stephanie has to work directly with a variety of Marketers, across roles and experience levels, making it essential that she can “speak their language.”

“The clients I typically engage with range from SEO Specialists, to Content Strategists, to Growth Marketers from some of the world’s leading brands and digital agencies,” she says, adding that this kind of interaction would not have been possible without her training.

“Professional skills development made a huge difference; it’s a great way to dip your toes in when you’re thinking about making a career change, and it really helped me develop an understanding of digital marketing.”

If you’re thinking of making a career change like Stephanie, BrainStation offers courses and training in everything from digital marketing, to data analytics, to product, and more.
