What You'll Learn

Students will begin the course with a review of programming fundamentals in Python and move on to creating simple programs for basic statistical methods. Once students have a competent grasp of programming, they will move onto more advanced data structures and algorithms such as decision trees and clustering. By the end of the course, students will have the knowledge, tools and resources needed to collect, analyze and communicate data effectively. Students are recommended to have a working knowledge of at least high school level statistics and an understanding of programming fundamentals is encouraged.

  • Programming Learn basic programming concepts using Python.
  • Data Management Import, sanitize, and process large datasets.
  • Analysis Collect, process, and extract information from data.
  • Modeling Write programs to find patterns in data.
  • Classification Sort and group data by common features.
  • Resources Learn where to find data sets and resources for study.
  • Programming Learn basic programming concepts using Python.
  • Data Management Import, sanitize, and process large datasets.

Is This Course For Me?

BrainStation’s Data Science course teaches you the fundamental skills to collect, organize, and understand large volumes of data. The course is also great for those who want to start to learn how to program or use programming to solve problems. By abstracting away design elements that are typically seen in Web or iOS Development, students can focus on just the fundamentals of programming using familiar statistical concepts. The latter part of the course then starts to investigate models and algorithms using code and larger data sets.

By the end of this course students will have an understanding of how to import CSV’s of data into a Python environment and perform analysis. Additionally, students will learn more about the online Data Science communities and how people share and study data collaboratively.

We recommend students have the following knowledge going into the course:

  • Introductory programming experience, Python preferred
  • Introductory Statistics
  • Completion of BrainStation’s Data Analytics course is highly recommended

Goal Setting

Students begin the Data Science course by outlining their course objectives and what they hope to achieve throughout their time learning at BrainStation. This is valuable information for our Educators, who use this data to support students in achieving their goals.

Access to Learning Content

All students enrolled in Data Science will have access to the lecture slides and additional readings outside of the classroom. This allows students to reference their new learnings when working on their final projects, and review Data Science topics and tools to continue applying their newfound skills after graduating.

Data Science students are given the opportunity to provide comprehension responses based on how they are digesting the course material. This is useful information for our Educators, who can provide additional resources and support where students need it to ensure they complete the course with a solid understanding of Data Science concepts.
