Amazon Has an Army of 45,000 Robots
Amazon is rapidly growing its army of robots, which the e-commerce giant uses at its many fulfillment centers.
The company now employs 45,000 robots across 20 fulfillment centers. That’s up a remarkable 50% from last year. Amazon also has 230,000 human workers.
Amazon says that despite the size of its robot army, they remain an experiment. For example, each fulfillment center has a different ratio of robots to humans as the company analyzes optimization. SOme centers rely almost exclusively on robots while others have virtually none.
The company is aggressively pursuing artificial intelligence. In addition to drone delivery and Alexa, Amazon is piloting a grocery store with no cashiers or even self-checkout.
