Artificial Intelligence That Can Lip-Read Significantly Better Than Humans

Not long after DeepMind solved multi-tasking in artificial intelligence, the deep minds at the Google-owned company have now invented a system that allegedly can lip-read better than humans.

In collaboration with scientists at Oxford University, DeepMind has developed a system that can observe silent speech and correctly interpret roughly half of words—more than triple the rate of even professional human lip readers.

Since many words have virtually identical mouth shapes, the system considers context by learning what words typically are strung together and to anticipate what words are likely to come next. Already the system has more than 17,000 words in its vocabulary.

The technology is far from commercially ready, researchers say, but will boast many useful applications when it is.
