Microsoft to Trump: Your Immigration Ban is a ‘Fundamental Step Backward’
Microsoft has joined a growing list of US tech titans who vocally oppose President Donald Trump’s temporary immigration ban on seven countries.
“We believe the executive order is misguided and a fundamental step backwards,” the company said in a statement. “There are more effective ways to protect public safety without creating so much collateral damage to the country’s reputation and values.”
Trump argues that his policy is similar to what Barack Obama did in 2011. That year, Obama banned visas for refugees from Iraq for six months. Which, at the time, stirred zero outrage, while Trump’s executive order would have you think he’s out to destroy the world.
“We will always as a company stand for that diversity and inclusion,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella this week. “That’s core to who we are. That I believe is core to what America is.”
Microsoft will continue to work directly with employees and their families affected by the executive order, including providing them with legal and other assistance. And the company will continue to advocate strongly on these issues with the Administration and with Congress.
Nadella added that, while he and his team opposed Trump’s decision, his company would “not overreact” to any single situation.
