Nest Team Working More Closely with Google to Create Unified Internet of Things Platform
Nest Labs will soon be working more closely with Google. The two subsidiaries joining forces will enable their parent company, Alphabet, to build a unified Internet of things platform.
Nest, which makes Internet-connected thermostats and smoke detectors, has an obvious synergy with Google, and the companies agree that it should fare better financially with its developers on Google’s payroll.
The joint project will be headed by Hiroshi Lockheimer, a longtime Google executive. He is senior vice president of Android. Lockheimer’s team will continue to develop Google Home, a smart device designed to compete with the Amazon Echo.
Google acquired Nest in 2014 for $3.2 billion.
