Pushing Original Video Content, Facebook to Launch App on Apple TV
Facebook may be working on an app for set-top boxes such as the Apple TV, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The app, says WSJ, is part of multiple projects with the collective goal to expand the social network’s video content offerings.
Sources told the Journal that Facebook wants to license long-form, TV-quality programming that would be accessible through the company’s app, which would run on set-top boxes—not movies or television, but rather news, sports, and viral content.
Facebook is among the world’s largest players of video content, but virtually none is original. Video content is consumed en masse via the social network, but its platform does not lend itself to a quality experience.
The WSJ was unable to pinpoint when Facebook could officially launch the app—there are many balls in the air currently—but this year is possible.
