Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke wants to get Canada Learning Code
“Learn to code and you’ll be employed for the rest of your life.” Thus spoke Chamath Palihapitiya, the well known and highly esteemed software engineer turned venture capitalist.
And he’s likely right. According to current projections, there will be a shortage of more than 200,000 ICT workers in Canada by the year 2020.
Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke would like to do something about it.
This week Canadian technology industry leaders came together to announce the launch of an initiative created to usher in a new era of Canadian innovation: Canada Learning Code.
Canada Learning Code is a cross-sector coalition formed to increase awareness of the importance of digital literacy and improve access to coding education in Canada.
This coalition, spearheaded by Ladies Learning Code’s CEO Melissa Sariffodeen and championed by Lütke as well as Version One Ventures’ Boris Wertz and Georgian Partners’ Justin Lafayette, will work over the next 10 years to reach a bold goal: create 10 million meaningful technology education experiences for Canadians. Other notable partners include Microsoft, Google, Boeing, and TELUS.
