Two Downtown Toronto Subway Stations Get Free Wifi but No Cellular Service
Two downtown Toronto subway stations now provide free wifi.
This week the Toronto Transit Commission announced that its Bloor-Yonge and St. George stations will have free wifi. However, cellular service—including texting and voice calling—will still not be available, as that requires a separate agreement with Canadian wireless carriers.
The TTC says that it will continue rolling wifi out to its subway stations. It hopes to equip all 61 stations with wifi and cellular service by 2017.
According to the TTC, Canadian carriers have “not demonstrated an eagerness” to work with the organization to bring cellular service to Toronto subway stations, despite strong demand from consumers.
In September, the Société de transport de Montréal leveraged Bell, Rogers, Telus and Vidéotron to bring 3G, 4G, and LTE service to Montreal’s underground metro system.
At a cost of roughly $50 million, the entire metro network will be wired. Two stations, Place des Arts and St. Laurent, could have wifi by the end of the year. However, the full deployment will take up to seven years.
